The webinar titled “The Development of Islamic Finance in the United Kingdom” co-organized by the Center for Applied Research in Islamic Economics and Finance and the Department of Economics at Ibn Haldun University, was held online on Thursday, April 30, 2026. The webinar featured Prof. Mehmet Asutay as the speaker.

The event focused on the experience of the United Kingdom as one of the key centers in the global Islamic finance ecosystem. Prof. Asutay discussed the historical development of Islamic finance in the UK, its institutional and regulatory environment, the significance of London as a global financial center, and the UK’s broader role in the international Islamic finance landscape.

Prof. Mehmet Asutay is a Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Political Economy & Finance at Durham University and the Director of the Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance. He is also the 2024 laureate of the IsDB Prize for his impactful academic contributions to Islamic economics.

The webinar aimed to contribute to a comparative understanding of country experiences in Islamic finance and to strengthen knowledge exchange among researchers, industry professionals, graduate students, and participants interested in the field.
